Writing news is, indeed, a
very delicate job. Every information must be taken accurately, technically, and
objectively. No supposition nor imagination must be included as long as
possible in order to give everyone a valid and reliable information regarding to the events
happening around our place.
I am
no a professional journalist, nor I have any background in journalism, I am just
an adventurous writer who, out of my deep passion in writing, want to venture
every literary forms I could try. I have written lots of poems, haikus,
tankas, sonnets, short stories, editorials, and news; I even tried to write and
compose a song. Whenever there is another genre that I find interesting to try,
I usually seek an opportunity to compose one.
I
remember the first time I was asked to write a news: I almost wanted to refuse
because I wanted to be as imaginative as I can. I knew that news writing is an
intricate job that every words you write must be factual and precise. I supposed
to refuse the favor because I feared that I may add my own phantasms in my
writings. Nevertheless, I accepted the order out of my faith in myself and of my
gratefulness for the opportunity given to me.
The
very first story which I covered was about the STC’s Holy Spirit Mass in 1st
semester, 2013-2014. I was just a transferee then, a newcomer, but I felt
blessed that I was given a chance to contribute an article in the school publication.
From then on, I became an official member of The Theresian Publication. As my
membership to the publication lasted for years, I have written more and more
news, usually about the liturgies and religious activities conducted by school
because of my background as an on-leave seminarian, and I eventually became
enamored in news writing.
Accuracy… this is the major
dictum I follow whenever I write a piece of news. As a news writer, my duty is
to record all the activities done in our school, and all the incidents
happening here. Dates, time, and names must be precisely noted; and all events
must be vigilantly stayed in touch. Every time I hold my pen to write a news, I
tend to be more scrupulous regarding to the validity of the information I am
writing because I know in my mind: I AM NOT JUST WRITING EVENTS, I AM WRITING
HISTORY.
As a
history enthusiast, I am always fancied with the idea that I have contributed
to record our history, to be a primary source of it. Saint Theresa College,
indeed, possesses a long colorful story, which I am grateful that I am given a
part to diarize her on going chronicles. I know that by doing so, I have also
given an opportunity to write the continuous rich history of Tandag.
As a
news writer, accuracy must be my primary motto.
This bon mot is so essential that I am not just jotting down current events; I
am also chronicling history. Every detail must be taken in scrupulous accuracy
because it can be a reference our future generation to understand themselves.
